FOTOGESCHICHTE - published in German - is an internationally renowned academic journal focusing on the relationship between photography and society. The journal views photography as a cultural, political, aesthetic and social phenomenon. The journal is also interested in the social and aesthetic context of photographic images. FOTOGESCHICHTE considers the history of photography to be a form of cultural and social history.

The journal was founded in 1981 in Frankfurt am Main by Timm Starl, who edited it until 2000 (with Hubertus von Amelunxen between 1989 and 1993). Since 2001, Anton Holzer (Vienna) has been the editor of FOTOGESCHICHTE. The journal is published by Jonas Verlag and has 80 pages per issue. Each issue (printed in full colour since 2020) contains five to six longer academic articles by well-known authors, as well as reviews of books, catalogues and exhibitions, and articles on current research.
